Jon Stewart seems to have found his next gig after staying out of the grid since leaving The Daily Show in 2015 – and he's bringing in a familiar friend.
The former talk show host will lead "Irresistible", a political satire based on his original idea, sources said. Variety. According to sources, Steve Carell is the star's first choice, but funding and planning must be defined first.
The details of the plot have not yet been revealed, but the film will be in Stewart's political wheelhouse. His first directorial concert was the 2014 political drama "Rosewater", centered on journalist Maziar Bahari, who was arrested by Iranian forces and interrogated him brutally, suspecting him of being a spy.
Stewart will also produce with Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment. Sources say the project is in its infancy, with the arrival of financiers and distributors. The start date of production is currently unknown.
Stewart and Carell have links back to The Daily Show before Carell becomes everyone's favorite TV boss on NBC's The Office. After starring in comedies like "The Virgin, 40" and "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," Carell ventured into the drama with "Foxcatcher" and "The Big Short." Then he will appear in "Beautiful Boy" of Amazon alongside Timothée Chalamet. Carell also has Universal's "Welcome to Marwen" and Adam McKay's "Vice", the biopic about former Vice President Dick Cheney.
Since leaving "The Daily Show", the industry has been intrigued by what Stewart will do next because the comedian, for the most part, has stayed away from the scene. At one point he signed an agreement with HBO to develop an animated series, but it was eventually abandoned due to difficult production times. Last November, Stewart starred in the HBO special "Night of the Stars".
