The community of Florence, South Carolina, is in mourning as a result of a large-scale shootings that has left six people injured and one dead among law enforcement officers.
On Wednesday, the Florence County Sheriff's deputies were serving a warrant for arrest when a man allegedly opened fire on MPs, wounding three people, according to the Associated Press.
The man, who has not yet been identified, would then have taken two children hostage, police said at the Wednesday evening press conference.
When the city's police force rushed into the sheriff's office, they were the target of heavy gunfire and four other police officers were injured, one of them fatally.
An armored vehicle had to be brought to rescue the wounded. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for one of the officers, who was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital and later identified by a city official as Terrence Carraway, 52 years old.
Carraway had just celebrated her 30th birthday as a police officer in the city, reports the AP.

According to Carraway's Facebook, he was a supporter of the Oakland Raiders and a lover of motorcycles.
The surviving officers were taken to the McLeod Regional Medical Center and their condition was unknown at that time.
"These officers went there without knowing the firepower of this suspect. "They thought it was a random search warrant," said Florence County Sheriff, Kenney Boone, at the press conference.
