RICHMOND, Virginia – The Virginia Department of Health encourages residents to get vaccinated every year.

Public health officials gathered on Wednesday to highlight the importance of the vaccine and get vaccinated against the flu.

Health Commissioner Norman Oliver said all people six months of age or older should be vaccinated against the flu. He said influenza can be a serious illness and even mild cases can be a waste of time at work or with friends and family.

The flu season normally starts in early October and ends in late May. Although seasonal epidemics can occur as early as October, during most seasons, influenza activity usually peaks in January or later.

The influenza vaccine formulation is reviewed annually and updated to track the progress of influenza viruses.
