The seaside events at the South Korean Film Festival have been moved inland with the impending typhoon Kong-Rey.

The organizers of the Busan International Film Festival are preparing for a rather hearty opening weekend, with the imminent arrival of a big typhoon.

The 21st edition of the South Korean film event will begin Thursday for a 10 day run until October 13th.

According to weather forecasts, typhoon Kong-Rey is expected to move south of the Korean peninsula, where Busan is located, over the weekend. It should cross the Ryukyu Islands and east of China until Friday, then turn right towards South Korea.

Kong-Rey is expected to get closer to Busan on Saturday mid-morning. The Korean Meteorological Administration has left between 80% and 90% chance that the typhoon will hit Busan directly.

The opening weekend usually attracts the biggest crowds of festivals. The organizers have therefore moved some of the outdoor events, including appearances of big Asian stars and filmmakers on a beachside stage at BIFF Village, inside. Discussion and meeting sessions were moved from Haeundae Beach to the Busan Film Center, the main venue for the opening and closing events.

This is not the first time that time tempers the atmosphere at the biggest Asian film festival.

In 2016, Typhoon Chaba arrived on the eve of the opening of the festival, damaging the structures of the BIFF Village, including several buildings, an outdoor stage and ATMs. More than two dozen key festival events, including hand-printing ceremonies, had to be relocated.
