REINES, New York –

A one-year-old girl is dead and her twin brother is in critical condition after the police have been called to their home in Queens.

Authorities who responded to a 911 call arrived at a basement apartment on Ashby Avenue shortly before 10 pm. Wednesday.

Inside, they found five children, including a severely traumatized unconscious one-year-old girl. Elaina Torabi has been declared dead. An autopsy will determine the cause of his death.

Her twin brother was found with pelvic and rib trauma, as well as lacerations to the body. He was taken to hospital in critical condition, but should survive.

Three other sisters, all under the age of 10, were also in the apartment but did not appear to have been injured.

Their mother, 33, was arrested. No charges were laid immediately.

The detectives study the possibility of neglect of children by the mother, who lives in the basement apartment with five children.
