A US service member was killed in Afghanistan on Thursday, according to a press release from NATO's Resolute Support Mission.

Although the press release does not provide details about the member's location or the cause of his death, the head of the US Central Command, General Joseph Votel, told reporters Thursday morning that "initial reports" suggested that the member of the service had been killed during "an action in combat."
Votel offered his condolences to the member's family and his unit.
"In order to attribute it to anyone, to the Islamic State or to the Taliban, I think we will have to find out more at this stage," he said.
The identity of the member of the service will be hidden 24 hours a day pending the notification of the next of kin.
The incident is currently under investigation, said Resolute support.
"We are crying and honoring the sacrifice of our military member," General Scott Miller, General of Support for Resolute Support and US Forces in Afghanistan, said in a statement.
In September, the United States lost two members of their service in Afghanistan, where about 14,000 soldiers advise and assist the country's armed forces in their fight against ISIL and the Taliban.
Command Sgt. Major Timothy A. Bolyard, 42, of Thornton, West Virginia, was killed on September 3rd during an insider attack in Logar Province.
The next day, the staff sergeant. Diobanjo S. Sanagustin, 32, of National City, Calif., Has died of a non-combat-related injury at Bagram Airfield.
The 17th anniversary of the US war in Afghanistan takes place on Sunday, October 7th.
