The charges against Ellison were revealed in a message posted on Facebook by Monahan's son, Austin. Ellison told WCCO, the video "probably could not exist because what is alleged has not happened."
A few days after the charges, Ellison won Democratic Party votes as a candidate for the Minnesota Attorney General.
According to a report released for the first time by the Associated Press, a lawyer hired by the Democrat-Peasant-Minnesota Labor Party to investigate the allegations, said the complaint of physical abuse could not be justified. The party submitted the case to local authorities, but the Minneapolis Police Department said they could not investigate because of a conflict of interest. The ministry said it was discussing with other law enforcement agencies to refer the case.
Ellison said in a statement that he had cooperated with this investigation and that he would do the same with others in the future. He asked the House ethics committee to investigate the allegations.
Prior to the allegations of abuse in August, Ellison had decided not to run for Congress again to run for the post of Attorney General of Minnesota.
