An American soldier killed in the war in Afghanistan

A member of the US military service was killed in action Thursday, Operation Resolute Support announced in a statement.

The incident is under investigation, officials said.

"We are crying and honoring the sacrifice of our military member," said General Scott Miller, commander of US and Resolute Support Forces in Afghanistan. "We remain committed."

The name of the person is concealed until the notification of his family.

Thursday's death would be the eighth of this year for US troops in Afghanistan.

In early September, a member of the US Armed Forces was killed in an incident without a fight and one day before, another died as a result of an insider attack. Another apparent attack in July would have killed a 20-year-old soldier.

Casualties among Afghan forces are increasing. About 500 Afghan soldiers were reportedly killed in September.

The last US death is just before the 17th anniversary of the beginning of the war in Afghanistan, which began on October 7, 2001, following the September 11 terrorist attacks. Children born after deadly attacks are now old enough to engage in war, a bloody endless stalemate.

Army General Joseph Votel, commander of the United States Central Command, told reporters Thursday that the Taliban could take the initiative in short campaigns but could not possess enough territory to ensure victory.
