An eight year old child found a sword from the pre-viking era while swimming in a lake in Sweden during the summer.

Saga Vanecek found the relic in Lake Vidöstern while she was in her family's vacation home in Jönköping County.

At first, the sword would have been built 1,000 years ago, but experts at the local museum think it could be around 1,500 years old.

"It's not every day you walk on a sword in the lake!" Mikael Nordström of the museum said.

The water level was extremely low at the time, due to a drought, which probably explains why Saga discovered the ancient weapon.

"I felt something in the water and I raised it.Then, there was a handful and I went to tell my dad that it looked like a sword," Saga said. to the Sveriges radio channel.

Saga's father, Andy Vanecek, told the English-language website The Local that he initially thought that his daughter had found an unusual stick or branch in the water.

It was only after asking a friend to take a closer look that he discovered that it was probably an old relic.

The local museum – which now retains the historical element – said that the sword was extremely well preserved.

Legend

Other excavations have revealed that ancient objects are hiding at the bottom of the lake

The discovery of Saga led the museum and the local council to conduct new excavations on the site, looking for a 3rd century brooch.

The Jönköping County Museum said its investigation of the lake was unfinished and that it could still reveal older objects.
