While she was swimming during her summer vacation, an eight year old girl grabbed what she thought was a stick from a lake in Sweden. Instead, it turned out that she had discovered a sword dating back over 1,000 years, according to archeology.
"It's not every day that you walk with a sword in the lake!" Said Mikael Nordström of the Jönköpings Läns Museum at the Swedish store The Local.
According to the Museum of Arts and Culture, the sword, which has preserved metal and wood, is approximately 33 inches long and dates from the 5th or 6th century AD.
"We are very keen to see the conservation staff do their job and see more details about the sword," said Nordström.
Saga Vanecek was at her family's summer home in Sweden when she removed the old sword from Lake Vidöstern in Tånnö, in southern Sweden, earlier this summer. The family contacted the authorities to report the surprising discovery.
The discovery of the sword was only made public this week, with museum officials expressing concern that too many people are rushing to the lake.
Due to a drought, the water at Lake Vidöstern would have been particularly low this year, which could have helped Saga see the artifact.
"I was out in the water, throwing sticks, pebbles and other objects to see how much they were jumping, then I found some kind of stick She told The Local.
"I picked it up and I was going to put it back in the water, but it had a handle and I saw that it was a little sharp at the end and all rusty . I held it in the air and I said, "Dad, I found a sword!
The historical sword can possibly be exposed to the public, but not for at least a year.
"The conservation process takes a lot of time because it is a complex environment with wood and leather, so they have several steps to ensure that it is preserved for the future," said Nordström.
