The Nobel Peace Prize 2018 was awarded on Friday to two activists against wartime sexual violence: Dr. Denis Mukwege, Congolese gynecological surgeon, and Nadia Murad, who became the dignified face of forced women in the United States. sexual slavery by the Islamic State group.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee said the prize was awarded to them "for their efforts to stop the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict".
Dr. Mukwege, who risked his life in a campaign to stop the use of large-scale rape as a weapon of war, is working in one of the most traumatized places in the world: l & rsquo; East of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In a hospital stripped of the hills above Bukavu, where for years there was little electricity or enough anesthetic, Dr. Mukwege operated on countless women who entered his hospital close to death. At the same time, he campaigned tirelessly to draw attention to the plight of Congolese women, even after being murdered a few years ago.
"After what happened, I have a new understanding," he wrote in the New York Times in 2012. "I saw what was inflicted on them. I heard them tell me that armed assailants raped them and killed their husbands, raped them and killed their children.
"I now understand this in a different way and I think of the women in my country who have suffered so much."
Ms. Murad was kidnapped alongside thousands of other women and girls from the Yazidi minority when the Islamic State invaded her country, in northern Iraq, in 2014, and the group, also known as ISIS, filed a complaint for rape.
While the majority of women who escaped from the Islamic State refused to be named, Ms. Murad urged reporters that she wants to be identified and photographed. She launched a global campaign telling and telling her story of suffering at the United Nations Security Council, the US House of Representatives, the United Kingdom House of Commons, and many other global organizations.
Ms. Murad said that she was exhausted from having to express herself repeatedly, but she knew that other Yazidi women had been raped at home: "I will come back in my life when women in captivity will regain their life, have a place, when I see people responsible for their crimes. "
His activism helped to persuade the US State Department to recognize the genocide of his people at the hands of the Islamic State. In 2016, she was named the first United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Victims of Trafficking in Human Beings. She told the story of her life in a recently published autobiography, "The Last Girl".
In 2016, Ms. Murad received the Vaclav Havel Human Rights Award, named in honor of the Czech writer and dissident who served as President of his country for 14 years after the fall of communism.
