Star Wars has its very first non-white, non-male director. It's a start.

Lucasfilm had the internet buzzing on Thursday night when he dropped the first official image of The mandalorian, the first live action television series Star Wars, scheduled for 2019.

And to the delight of many fans, the company has announced something else: the first women and people of color to run Star Wars. Deborah Chow, veteran of television, Dope Rick Famuyiwa, director, Bryce Dallas Howard, actor-director, and Taika Waititi (from Thor: Ragnorak fame) all direct episodes of the first season of the series.

The world-famous Star Wars franchise has an extremely diverse fan base. But until now, the Star Wars director's chair was only occupied by white men (from 1977: George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, Richard Marquand, Lucas again, JJ Abrams, Gareth Edwards, Rian Johnson and Ron Howard).

Almost all the screenwriters recognized in Star Wars movies were also white men – with the exception of Leigh Brackett, who unfortunately died of cancer before she could contribute more than a first version of The empire counter-attack. Lucas dropped his draft.

We still do not have a woman or a person of color engaged to make a Star Wars feature film. Abrams is filming the next Star Wars movie, Episode IX, still untitled. Two future trilogies have been announced, one produced by Johnson, the other by The iron Throne stars David Benioff and Dan Weiss. Johnson will premiere his trilogy, but there are still five films for which no director has yet been announced.

Such a diversity of directors for The mandalorian suggests that the company is sensitive to criticism that it is obsessed with male filmmakers. It could also be a way to effectively audition these directors. Lucasfilm's president, Kathleen Kennedy, has stated in the past that she could not hire more women to direct her hit movies because there were not enough women directors.

(That was before Kennedy fired a series of annoying men who would have proven themselves in other films: Josh Trank, Chris Miller and Phil Lord, and Colin Trevorrow.)

Dave Filoni, Supervisor of Animated Shows, is also on the list Wars of clones and The rebels. Filoni, fan favorite, was hired to lead the first episode of The mandalorian. Rumors have been circulating for years about the fact that he's about to move on to staging Star Wars, and that certainly indicates that he's in good standing with Kennedy.

Do not worry, white guys – your level of representation in a far and distant galaxy is in no way compromised.
