WASHINGTON – The Maryland State Police said the multiple accidents and lane closures on Friday morning on the Capital Beltway's outer loop had been caused by a mixture of oil buildup and oil spills. The soldiers received phone calls signaling a possible spill of oil around 6 am. Several accidents have also been reported. The soldiers present at the scene found no trace of oil spill.
According to Montgomery Fire County spokesman Pete Piringer, there have been six different accidents and other incidents involving tractor-trailers and dump trucks.
Maryland state police say three people were transported to local hospitals; their wounds do not put their lives in danger. Some of the cars involved in accidents suffer significant damage.
"Although there is no exact count, there seems to have been more than a dozen vehicles involved. Some were collision spurs with a single vehicle. Others were several vehicles colliding, "Piringer told WTOP.
WTOP Traffic indicates at 7 am that the emergency line was about 7 km of lines, from New Hampshire Avenue.
