Thursday night, Boston Celtics goaltender Kyrie Irving announced his intention to sign up again with the Celtics free agency next summer.

"I shared it with some of my teammates, with the organization and with everyone in Boston," said Irving at an event for TD Garden season ticket holders, via the Celtics. "If you want me to come back, I plan to sign here again next year."

This announcement surprised many people who thought that Irving would generate a ton of interest in the free agent market next summer – and a ton of rumors before the month of July. On Friday, Irving discussed his announcement – and plans to stay in Boston after the 2018-1920 NBA season – with members of the media.

"The timing is everything with that," said Irving. "I'm happy to be able to share it with Boston fans and the people who live there. It was a great reception, I was just happy to do it with .I really intend to sing back [with the Celtics]I just wanted to clarify things … I have every intention of signing with Boston. "

Irving went into great detail to explain the reason for his decision.

"The important thing was just to be happy," Irving said. "Having an environment in which I am challenged … and I can improve myself as a basketball player and as a man and grow up here."

In the end, Irving hopes to have his sweater hanging in the beams of the TD Garden.

"I dream of putting my number 11 in the attic someday," said Irving. "… to grow in the history and tradition of the Boston Celtics, I'm happy to be able to do it and plan to do it."

Technically, things could change by next summer, but for now, Irving seems totally committed to the Celtics. Moreover, if he changed his mind after publicly expressing his intention to stay, he would quickly become the number one public enemy in Boston.
