A large platform overturned and dumped 27 tonnes of dirt on the roadway Friday morning on Interstate 680 in Pleasanton, causing all southbound lanes to close, authorities said.

The collision occurred just before 5 am near Bernal Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.


Officers received reports of two vehicles, including a white Honda Civic, driving recklessly on the highway, said CHP spokesman Kevin Johnson.




Vehicles were coming and going in the corridors before the accident and a vehicle was traveling at about 100 mph, CHP said.

Both cars crashed and the Honda Civic continued to roll south. When the Honda Civic ran out of the scene, the vehicle swept the big platform and spilled on the guardrail, Johnson said. The Honda Civic also fled the scene of this accident, he added.


The accident spilled 27 tonnes of concrete sand onto the road.

All southbound lanes have been closed and a severe traffic alert has been issued for the area. The lanes were to reopen at 1 pm

The large platform was overturned in the middle lane and tow trucks were on hand to clear the roadway.

"The trickiest thing is the big tractor, which hangs over the guardrail … once they've taken away the trailers the tractor will want to slide on that dike," Johnson said.

The sand must be removed from the trailers before the crews can move the large platform, added Johnson.

Minor injuries have been reported.
