New York is one of the 10 most stressed states in the country, according to a new report based on census data.
The Empire State is ranked fifth on the new Zippia rankings, an employment search site. New Jersey was number one while Iowa won the title of the least stressed state.
California ranked fourth, but several other top 10 states were in the south, including Florida, Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina, and Mississippi.
Zippia used six criteria to measure each state's stress levels, including long travel time, unemployment, hours worked, population density, the ratio of housing price to income, and the percentage of the population. uninsured. The data comes from the United States Census at the American Community Survey from 2012 to 2016.
The report found that New Yorkers spent more time commuting than any other state, Zippia said. This finding is particularly true for the New York area.
Zippia pointed out that those in the New York metro area could easily be late for work between traffic and crowded metros, even though they were leaving at the time.
The high cost of living in New York also adds to the state's stress level, Zippia said. And while property taxes are a concern for New Yorkers from Plattsburgh to Hempstead, this discovery is probably magnified by the astronomical cost of living in and around New York City.
New Jersey took first place on the list because of its long commutes, long hours of work and high housing prices, Zippia said.
