Facebook has held a "general meeting" with employees to try to quell the indignation after a senior executive took part in the recent hearing before the Senate of Brett Kavanaugh, a candidate for the US Supreme Court. CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Operations Manager Sheryl Sandberg were both present.
Last week, Joel Kaplan, the company's chief policy officer, was visibly sitting behind Kavanaugh, Trump's US Supreme Court nominee, as the judge was angrily defending against numerous sexual misconduct.
Kaplan and Kavanaugh are friends, having worked together in the Bush administration, and he was there as an individual – but his appearance angered his employees and the company's executives messed up his initial response.
On Friday, the company convened a meeting at which = Zuckerberg, = Sandberg and Kaplan all spoke to try to dispel the internal tensions.
According to an Axios report, Zuckerberg emphasized the importance of supporting people with different points of view on Facebook. The company has recently been criticized by conservative employees who feel unable to talk about their political beliefs.
Kaplan reportedly felt that he had an obligation to Kavanaugh and he acknowledged that he should have been released before leaving. He had previously excused himself for the uproar while defending his actions, writing to his colleagues: "I want to apologize, I recognize that this moment is deeply painful – both internally and at home. # 39; external … I believe that it is important to stand alongside his friends, difficult for them. "
Some Facebook employees argued that Kaplan's appearance made them uncomfortable or "inappropriate". "Personal capacity does not exist when you are a high level executive / executive of the company … I could feel uncomfortable sharing the workplace with this person now ", wrote an employee in a message before Friday's meeting which was held by Business Insider.
A Facebook spokesman declined to comment on the recording.
