The opportunities to win the World Series do not show up very often for the vast majority of Major League Baseball franchises. When they do, there is always little room for error.
We have already seen this week how quickly the opportunity can escape. Post-season dreams ended for the Chicago Cubs and the Oakland Athletics. Both teams were eliminated in the wild card game of their respective league. The Atlanta Braves and Colorado Rockies could follow after bowing 0-2 in their respective NHLDS.
For the moment, there are eight teams left and each feels a certain urgency to make this season his season. Yes, even the defending champion Astros. However, for some of these teams, and especially for some of these fans, this is even more important. For some, it's because a World Series celebration has not happened for a very long time. For others, because it never happened.
What we are trying to say is that winning is not easy. With this in mind, we asked the Yahoo Sports team which of the eight remaining playoff teams this year would most need to win the World Series in 2018, and why.
Cleveland Indians
It's the Indians for me. And yes, the drought of the championship that lasted 69 years is the main reason, but it is also the shape of the current landscape. While the rest of the AL power station still has a lot to do, the Indians are definitely getting closer to closing their championship. Even this season, they clearly took a step back, so they tried their luck on Josh Donaldson. With a few key free agents this winter, LA 's other powers becoming stronger and new teams ready to go up, is the year when the Indians have to bring the World Series championship back to Cleveland. (Mark Townsend)
While the Brewers and Rockies are the franchises without World Series in this divisional round, the team also does not really need a title. It would be Cleveland, who has a World Series drought longer than the existence of these two teams. The team is currently on a series of three consecutive titles in center AL and does not seem to be slowing down with Jose Ramirez, Francisco Lindor and a cumulative rotation, but each year could be considered another missed opportunity at this stage. (Jack Baer)
Boston Red Sox
Let's forget history and droughts and think about the present moment. The Boston Red Sox had their best season in the history of the franchise. They won the most games of the regular season. They spent the last few years paying a lot of money to free agents (J.D. Martinez and David Price), or to make big exchanges to speed up a championship (Chris Sale). If they do not win a world series, 2018 will be a gigantic failure. The Red Sox already seem to doubt a little more than a team of 108 wins should be because of the holes in their enclosure. If they do not win everything, their detractors will just have more ammo. (Mike Oz)
Los Angeles Dodgers
Most teams do not see their clash windows stay open for so long. After being so close the last two seasons, the Dodgers have to find a way to break through quickly. Once the season is over, the Dodgers could lose Manny Machado, Brian Dozier and Hyun-jin Ryu. Clayton Kershaw could choose not to participate. While everyone expects him to come back to the Dodgers, there's no guarantee he'll stay healthy after failing 200 innings in the last three seasons. On top of that, Rich Hill, Matt Kemp and Justin Turner are already in their thirties. (Chris Cwik)
The Los Angeles Dodgers have won six consecutive titles in the NL West and have no world series to show for it. Their last title? 1988. At the end of the season, the Dodgers will lose the mid-season acquisition Manny Machado and Clayton Kershaw may also waive his contract. Superstars like Justin Turner are aging and a new year of career from Max Muncy is hardly considered for the future. The Dodgers have all the pressure in the world in October to finally win everything. (Johnny Flores)
Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers: The Brewers have only been around since 1970 (or 1969 as the Seattle Drivers) and since then they have only played in the playoffs four times before 2018. Four times in almost 50 years! You can say that a team that constantly sniffs in the playoffs, like the Nationals, "needs" to win the World Series. But they at least managed to make significant baseball in October on a semi-regular basis. The Brewers have so few appearances that every time they go in October, it's a landmark event for the franchise. The Brewers win would show everyone that small teams in the market can also run with big dogs. There is more than one way to rebuild a team and it must not look like the Yankees or the Red Sox. With the American league so devoid of parity, a National League team such as the winning Brewers would make a statement: a team does not have to look like or behave like another team to win everything. (Liz Roscher)
The Brewers are still playing in the shadows of a Cubs team that has already been eliminated. Forget the fact that they are among the most exciting players in the game currently in Christian Yellich and Josh Hader, a win in the World Series would bring their rivalry with Chicago to a level never before achieved. Milwaukee did not even win a pennant in its history, so going to the World Series would be a big feat. But a championship would make things a little more interesting in the Central National League for years to come. While the Cubs and Cardinals are struggling to get together and the Reds and Pirates are rebuilding as quickly as possible, it could be a window as big as the one Milwaukee has ever had.
