What do the Yankees of New York, the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers have in common? Well, except that everyone has a large payroll and all are still alive in the playoffs?
They all take the backseat of a surprising team in support of a significant portion of the United States. At least that's the story of the research done by Sportsbetting.ag. The website has set up an infographic that identifies the core interests of each state based on geolocated Twitter data.
The team that wins the most support from most states? No one but the Colorado Rockies.
The Rockies are the most tagged team in 17 US states. For example, it covers the Rocky Mountain region and extends over much of the Midwest. The Yankees follow closely with 15.
Location, location, location
Why is the Midwest not a surprise? This is largely the territory of the Cardinals of St. Louis. We know that Cardinals fans yearn for the Rockies to knock out the Milwaukee Brewers, much like the Rockies eliminated the Chicago Cubs in the NL Wild Cards game. The Brewers and Cubs are the biggest rivals of the Cardinals.
The Rockies have also found support in the northwest, indicating that Seattle Mariners have embraced the Rockies or are tired of seeing many of the same teams come back in streaks when their team misses its October 17 in a row.
The most surprising state of the Rockies? Arizona. True, they share a spring training center with the Arizona Diamondbacks, their home state, but these teams also have a healthy rivalry. Perhaps there is even more respect.
How do the other teams evaluate?
As noted, the Yankees are behind the Rockies with 15 states. This includes Nevada, which happens to be home in Las Vegas, which is Bryce Harper's hometown. I'm just saying.
Most will point out that states supporting the Yankees are more populous than those supporting the Rockies. It may be true, but the support of the Rockies is pretty impressive. Just look at the size and pride of the Rocky Mountain logo on this map.
The Atlanta Braves, once considered the American team, owns the southern United States with six states. The Brewers take the north with five states. And no, it's not a misprint. The Red Sox only have three, and the Dodgers only two.
Next Sunday, there may be a new way to go for those looking to win the Rockies. With Friday's 4-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, the Rockies enter the third game of the NHLD to a loss of elimination.
