Two people were arrested after the shooting in Oakland that left six injured just hours after the city's monthly art event, announced Saturday, officials said.
Officers heard gunshots around 12:10 pm in the Williams Street area and Telegraph Avenue, less than half a mile from where the city is holding its first Friday, according to the police department. Oakland.
The dispute escalated between two men who fired at each other, the police said. These men, who were not identified, were in critical condition after being shot in the body and limbs, police said.
They were arrested after being transported to a hospital.
Three other men from the area were also injured and taken to the hospital.
Authorities said Saturday afternoon that another person had also been affected, bringing to six the total number of casualties.
The situation of victims varies from stable to critical, the police said. They are between 18 and 46 years old.
Photos posted on Facebook by the Oakland Police Association (Association of Oakland Police Officers) showed patrol vehicles whose passenger windows and rear window were broken as a result of "attacks by these suspects."
The group condemned the shooting by stating that "the violence perpetrated in our city is unacceptable".
The first Friday of Oakland, which attracts thousands of people from the Bay Area, ends around 9 pm. The event takes place on the first Friday of each month and features galleries, street performers, local chefs, musicians, dancers and poets.
Another shooting that took place nearly an hour later about 11 miles away hurt a man, police said.
The incident occurred around 1:30 am in block 2100 Broadway, according to authorities.
The man, who was not identified, received a gunshot wound in his leg and was in a stable condition.
Two suspects fled and no arrests were made.
