MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Mexican police arrested a couple suspected of having participated in the killing of at least 10 women and selling a little girl, authorities said Friday.

Alejandro Gomez, attorney general of the State of Mexico, who borders the capital, said in a video posted on Facebook that the couple had been found during the search for three missing women, one of them with his baby.

The couple, a man and a woman, were arrested on Thursday after leaving a home in Ecatepec, a suburb of Mexico City, with a child car in which investigators had hoped to find the missing child, said Gomez in the video.

Instead, they found a black bag containing human remains.

Subsequent investigations revealed that the couple had previously deposited other human remains nearby. When questioned, the man identified as being Juan Carlos N explained that he had participated in the murder of at least 10 women, Gomez added.

The motive for the murders was not clear.

The couple confessed to having sold the missing two-month-old girl, found safe and sound and returned to her grandmother. The couple who acquired the baby was arrested, said Gomez.

Thousands of women have disappeared or been murdered during a sharp rise in violence in Mexico in recent years. According to government statistics, at least 2,585 alleged killings of women were reported last year, up from 1,755 in 2015.

Of this total, the largest number was in the State of Mexico, the most populated region of the country. Ecatepec became known as the center of the massacres.
