When a part is welded to the chassis of a vehicle, it can reasonably be expected that this part remains welded to that vehicle. But when that's not the case, as is the case with some Jeep Wranglers, it's time to proceed with a recall.
Fiat Chrysler is preparing to issue a voluntary recall for an unspecified number of Jeep Wrangler JL SUV 2018-2019. As many of these vehicles are still on sale at the dealership, the automaker has released a stop sale for vehicles still in the dealer's possession, according to documents posted on the JL Wrangler forum. These vehicles can not be sold or delivered until reminder work is complete. A spokesman for Fiat Chrysler confirmed the next recall, claiming that the number of vehicles affected was "not important" and that no accident or injury had been associated with the problem until the accident occurred. ;now.
The problem stems from a piece welded to the chassis of the vehicle. Clearly, some of the recalled Wranglers may have been built with an improper weld connecting the front guide rail to the frame, which in some situations could separate it from the chassis. If this occurred, the vehicle could experience a decrease (or absence) of steering, which greatly increases the risk of an accident. The steering bar, sometimes referred to as the Panhard bar, is a rigid bar that connects the axle of the vehicle to its chassis, thus preventing undesirable sideways movement of the axle.
For the moment, the way Jeep plans to address this problem is unclear. According to Jalopnik, who has contacted several owners who have reported track bar problems, at least one owner is having their vehicle replaced. Whether or not Fiat Chrysler will attempt to repair or replace all affected vehicles? This remains to be confirmed. There is a precedent for the total replacement – after recalling 293 examples of its Ascent SUV for the missing welds on the B-pillar, Subaru offered full replacement of all vehicles involved.
The affected owners will receive first class mail notifications. At least some dealers have already received the FCA recall notification, according to Jalopnik, who was posted on the JL Wrangler forum earlier Friday. This notice indicates that the recall should begin in the fourth quarter of 2018.
