KAILUA-KONA (KHON2) – Something mysterious happened this week in a Kailua-Kona seal hospital, leaving many people confused.

Dr. Claire Simeone of Ke Kai Ola's Center for Marine Mammals was on lunch break when she began to be inundated with work calls.

"I chose [my phone] and it was silence, but it came from our Ke Kai Ola hospital, "said Dr. Simeone.

Worried that it was an emergency related to the monk seal, she rushed to work.

"When I arrived, everyone was relaxed and I said," Why did you call me so much? and they said, "We did not call you," she said.

She says people started calling the hospital to ask why the hospital was constantly calling them.

"I called Hawaiian Telcom and I talked to them. They said it was maybe a problem related to one of the phones, that there was a shortfall." and that they all came from this line, but they did not know which one, "she said.

Dr. Simeone said that it did not come from the office or from the main bedroom of the hospital, so she went to check the lab.

"And I saw that there was a gecko on the touch screen trying to call," she says laughing.

She tells us that the gecko was in the middle of a phone call when she came in.

"He called everyone on our list of recent calls," she added.

As for catching the culprit?

"He was super fast, but he could be located and he is in a factory outside," she said.
