The third time, charm, and charms are useful when dealing with fairies and monsters. Next spring will see the release of the third Hellboy movie, this time directed by Neil Marshall and starring David Harbor, and several New York Comic Con participants had a glimpse of EW's Clark Collis panel on Saturday.
Harbor co-stars Daniel Dae Kim (played by the irascible commando Ben Daimio) and Sasha Lane (played by Alice Monaghan, the human woman touched by the fairies) were also present to discuss the film, as did the creator from Hellboy, Mike Mignola. Ian McShane (who plays Hellboy's adoptive father, Trevor Bruttenholm) was unable to do so, while Milla Jovovich (who plays the naughty Nimue, the queen of blood) sent a pre-recorded video message.
Of course, a big question mark on the new movie is its difference from the previous two. Hellboy films made by Guillermo del Toro and performed by Ron Perlman. On the panel stage, Harbor admitted he was nervous about Perlman's iconic performance, but explained how he had made his version of Hellboy different from the one before.
"My approach may be a little darker and dirty," said Harbor. "My Hellboy feels a little younger: he has hair, he has a little more inner sorrow, he has more conflicts with Bruttenholm, he is a little more lost in the universe. I just bring more of what I bring. The feeling is completely different and, in this way, I can enjoy both and hope you can do it too. For me, this character deserves a long life, and he deserves more movies. I want to see him grow up and change, and get to the bottom of Mike's things, which is really a horror, even an existential horror in some way. I think we've managed some of that in this movie, while having fun – there are a lot of jokes. It's more like Mike Mignola than Guillermo del Toro. That's what Neil and I wanted to do and I hope you enjoy it.
Shortly after, the panel presented exclusive images of the new film. Right away, he showed Hellboy Harbor being shot by cops as he tried to help them fight a monster. "I'm on your side!" He exclaims with the exasperated tone of someone who has already had this conversation many times. McShane's Bruttenholm seems to explain that "we are the line in the sand, we fight against the forces of darkness". But not everyone believes that Hellboy should stand on that line with them; Daimio complains at one point in Bruttenholm: "I thought we were supposed to fight monsters and not work with them." Of course, Daimio is not the most normal human being; The right side of his face is completely covered with monstrous scars, a fact that Hellboy quickly reminds him of.
The new film is an adaptation of a huge saga of Hellboy comics, one of the few films that Mignola did not draw himself; he just wrote, while artist Duncan Fegredo comes in to illustrate the fairies and monsters brought together by a resurrected Nimue to destroy humanity (the nerds of mythology may recognize Nimue as the witch who had imprisoned the sorcerer Merlin and he had stolen his power, at the time Camelot). Mignola had previously told EW that the film faithfully adopted the look of Fegredo's creations and that it was clear in the video: a giant swinging his club on Hellboy seemed to have left the page altogether. while the few glimpses of Nimue show her all the glory of the queen of blood, dressed in her magical crown as dark energy wraps around her. There was also a Hellboy shot in demonic glory, brandishing a flaming sword with a fiery crown resting over his head, in the same way that the character appears on the newly unveiled movie poster.
Hellboy clearly has many existential conflicts to solve in this movie. Addressing EW after the debate, Harbor pointed out some similarities with his best-known role, Chef Hopper on Strange things.
"There are a lot of things that are identical when it comes to this guy who has a very pure heart but the externals are a little crisp and weird," Harbor told EW. "Hopper is also a guy who is a bit of a kid at the base, and can not be an adult. I always thought it was interesting to see that the character is called Hellboy, and I know he's not technically a boy, but it sticks, he never becomes Hellman. Hellboy certainly has different roles of Chef Hopper and he exists in the world differently. So there was a lot of work to be done and they are different. But in his mind, there's the feeling of a guy trying to do what's right but who's stuck in a situation where he does not know how to do that, which is very similar to Hopper. "
Mignola, who stated on the panel that his wife had first told him that she thought Harbor would make a good Hellboy while they were watching. Strange things, told EW that both characters share a deep sense of weariness with the world.
"Hopper was tired of being there, of doing that and being beaten. It has always been a big deal with Hellboy, "Mignola told EW. "Hellboy is pretty much based on my father, who was one of those guys, a veteran of the Korean War who had traveled the world and done all that. I've always thought it was part of Hellboy. I have been doing this job for a very long time, yet it has never really grown up. He lives this teenage life and also works seven weeks a week around the world. "
Because of this feeling of weariness and exasperation of the world, Harbor explained that the Hellboy one-liners (at one point in the sequence, he reacts to what Bruttenholm offers him a huge monster hunting pistol in saying, "Most parents do not receive LEGO children?") come more from a sense of displacement than from mere humor.
"What's interesting for the one-liners, is that I wanted them to come from a place that is not only comical, but also from a guy who does not know." really what it is, "said Harbor. Hellboy receives an existential help from Lane's character, Alice, a human who has a foothold in the magical world. Addressing EW after the panel, Lane said that although Alice is not necessarily the more human, "she has things to teach Hellboy to be caught between the human world and the magical world.
"I have the impression that she has more control and that she embraces him more," Lane told EW. "When she meets Hellboy and Daimio, she'll tell me I'll be your rock in this area. It's not because you fight these two things that you have to get lost. "
Kim, who replaced Ed Skrein as Daimio after Daimio moved away from the project, explained on stage how cool it was to portray an Asian-American character in a big cartoon movie. Readers of the Hellboy and BPRD comics know that Daimio's Japanese heritage plays an important role in his life. Kim told EW that Daimio's past experience with xenophobia played an important role in his tense relationship with Hellboy.
"I think the character, in general, has some appearance problems," Kim told EW. "He has a military background and his Asian character has been shaped by his Asian ethnicity. Then he has the scar to treat, so he has multiple appearance problems. This deeply affects his character and touches the heart of what he feels about Hellboy and his existence in the world in relation to his existence in the world. "
