JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville police are investigating the deaths of two women within 20 minutes of each other in different parts of the city, according to officials.
An arrest was made in one of the murders late on Saturday afternoon.
At approximately 12:30 pm, police were called to the Cross Creek apartments on Manotak Avenue to check for shots fired in the area. When the agents arrived, they discovered a dead woman in the parking lot of the apartment complex.
She was identified as Ashley Stephens, 34 years old. Her family has provided a photo of her at News4Jax.
A witness testified that he heard gunshots and saw a small car leave the scene.
Jacksonville police said her husband, Marco Stephens, was arrested near Tampa after being found behind the wheel of his car.
A Pasco County MP said he was leaving a RaceTrac station when a man with traces of blood appeared to be covered with blood on the front of his clothes.
Investigators said the man later identified as Marco Stephens made incriminating statements about a crime in Jacksonville and surrendered. Detectives on the Jacksonville homicide went to Pasco County and arrested Stephens for the murder of his wife.
The Jacksonville police said the two were married but separated.
Residents of Cross Creek Apartments are so concerned about the violence that they do not want to give their names for interviews. A man said it was really getting tough in the area
"Probably about a year ago, it started and the situation became out of control," he said.
The other woman was killed in Jacksonville around midnight on Saturday. She was found dead inside the Vista apartment complex, formerly known as the Cleveland Arms. The police suspect a criminal act but do not say how she died.
His identity will not be revealed until his family is informed. Homicide detectives are investigating leads, but have not announced any suspects in this case.
