The Buffalo Bills are poised to bring veteran quarterback Derek Anderson over the next 24 hours to give rookie Josh Allen an experienced mentor, ESPN sources told the league.
Anderson was the alternate during Cam Newton's first seven years with the Carolina Panthers, where Sean McDermott, current coach of the bills, and general manager, Brandon Beane, have already worked.
The original Bills project, after trading Tyrod Taylor for the Browns and drafted for Allen with the No. 7 overall, was to include AJ McCarron on the list of players, as well as quarterback Nathan Peterman. However, this plan collapsed when McCarron was injured in the pre-season and later he was traded to the Raiders.
After Peterman dropped out early in the week against the Ravens, the Bills were among a handful of teams evaluating the other quarters to give more experience to this position. One of those shifts is former Steelers replacement Landry Jones, but experience and familiarity with McDermott and Beane have played for Anderson, sources said.
No deal has been finalized, and bills will have to make at least one list change on Monday to accommodate Anderson. The Bills may also need to assess their alignment needs if more injuries surface after the Titan match on Sunday.
Most teams have already had a veteran presence with their young quarterbacks. The top 10 this year is a good example: Browns 'Baker Mayfield has veterans Taylor and Drew Stanton, Jets' Sam Darnold have Josh McCown and Josh Rosen of the Cardinals with mentor Sam Bradford and Mike Glennon. Rookie Ravens Lamar Jackson, 32nd overall, has Joe Flacco and Robert Griffin III.
Anderson, 35, is a 12-year-old veteran who has spent the last seven seasons with Carolina. He was Pro Bowler with the Browns in 2007, when he collected 3,787 yards and 29 touchdowns.
