A native of Myrtle Beach died and a man from Georgia faces murder charges as a result of a shootout at Riptydz early Sunday morning.
The victim was Roger Ramos, 25, according to the Horry County Coroner's Office.
Police in Myrtle Beach said they arrested Jakkari Jaquille De'Andre Brown, 24, from Tocca, Georgia. He is awaiting warrants for murder, possession of a deadly weapon when committing a violent crime, unlawful use of a weapon and wearing a weapon. pistol or a gun in the premises of a company selling alcohol, beer or wine.
At approximately 1:15, authorities responded to a shooting at Riptydz Oceanfront Grille, 1210 N. Ocean Blvd., according to the police department. The police investigation determined that a fight had broken out in the bar and that a man had fired the shot, hitting the victim in the head.
Witnesses helped identify the suspect, who was quickly arrested, police said.
Daniel Stotler was with Ramos in Riptydz and fought tears as he talked about the loss of his friend since elementary school.
"I will never see my friend again," said Stotler.
Stotler said Ramos and he were in Riptydz to attend a UFC match. A fight broke out in the grille and ended quickly. A second fight then began.
"I see the guy pulling out the gun," said Stotler.
Stotler shouted "gun", jumped to protect a woman and the shot rang. He looked up to see Ramos' legs on the floor as people tried to provide care. Stotler felt that he was six feet away when the shooting occurred.
T. Brad Hudson and his wife on the third floor, when the shootings sounded nearly 200 people, he wrote in a message to Sun News. On the roof, there was no apparent escape route, but his wife lay down on teenagers to protect them and keep them calm.
The bar staff opened the back door and shouted for everyone to go out by a staircase, according to Hudson.
"An adorable guy"
A graduate of Myrtle Beach High School, Ramos was a fun guy, someone who would give his back shirt to another person and a spiritual man, Stotler said.
"It was an adorable guy," said the childhood friend.
Riptydz owner Steve Ghidella said Ramos was an employee on leave.
"Our thoughts are with his family," said Ghidella.
Ghidella said the grid was secure, but she did not know how the suspect had put the gun in the facility. Riptydz officials released a sunday afternoon statement on social media about the shooting.
The restaurant has indicated that it will be closed until Wednesday.
Councilors will be available to staff members on Monday before a private memorial, the statement said. It is planned to create a GoFundMe page and the grille will donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale in the coming weeks to the Ramos family. Relatives report being "shocked by the tragic and senseless violence of firearms".
The Mayor of Myrtle Beach, Brenda Bethune, also published articles on social media in response to the shooting she described as "foolish". In her message, Bethune said that she wanted to remind people that Myrtle Beach was safe and that there was an injured family.
"Let's continue to be a community that cares about us and show our love and support in this time of need," she wrote on Facebook.
