Winners and losers of NFL Week 5

Six main coaches were hired during the 2017 off season. Five of them worked well.

Sean McVay (Rams) was elected coach of the year. Doug Marrone (Jaguars) and Sean McDermott (Bills) led their teams to unexpected playoff spots. Kyle Shanahan (49ers) and Anthony Lynn (Chargers) led the end-of-season waves. These teams have no regrets. It's an excellent class.

And then there's the Broncos general manager, John Elway, who had all the candidates to look at and who eventually hired Vance Joseph. Joseph may not finish his second season if things do not turn around.

In seven days, Joseph's seat became perhaps the hottest in the entire NFL. Denver lost a 10-point lead against the Kansas City Chiefs at home Monday night, and the New York Jets eliminated them on Sunday. The Broncos scored the first seven points, then the Jets scored 34 of the next 37 points. It's a brutal performance in every conceivable way.

"Same [stuff] Every week said Derek Wolfe, Broncos striker, at the end of the match, according to Nicki Jhabvala, of The Athletic. "I'm tired of talking about the same thing [stuff] during two years.

"We had a lot of energy in training, a lot of energy at the beginning of the match, we started the hot match. Something – something much deeper is happening here that I can not really understand. "

The Broncos are 2-3 and what comes next? A date next Sunday against the 5-0 Rams of Los Angeles. Uh oh.

No one outside the Broncos building puts Joseph on the spot. Elway did it months ago. Elway admitted that after finishing last season with a 5-11 record, he had considered sending Joseph back after only one season. That put immediate pressure on his head coach for the season. Everyone knew that Joseph needed a good season, otherwise there would be no third chance.

"We looked at different options, but my ultimate goal was to stay with Vance and give it that chance," Elway said at an end-of-season press conference in January.

At this press conference, Joseph said, "I had the rumors and indecision to bring me back because it was not enough. I understand that."

Joseph's job security is a constant topic of conversation in Denver. We talked about it all before even the end of last season, before Elway paused before officially retaining Joseph, allowing everyone to know that Joseph was fired after a season was over. have passed. Joseph was put in an awful situation, a position in which none of the other five new recruits had arrived last year. The Broncos were one year behind the victory at the Super Bowl. Expectations were therefore unrealistic. But they had a terrible quarterback and holes on the offensive, thanks to Elway's misfires. Elway admitted he did not put Joseph in a good position last season.

The Broncos have added talent this year. The repechage class is bearing fruit right away, even with a slow pick, Bradley Chubb. The second round selection, Courtland Sutton, seems to be the best receiver of the Broncos. Royce Freeman and Phillip Lindsay are a good 1-2 rookie hitter to run. And freelance, the Broncos have amassed quarterback Case Keenum, who started a very good season with the Minnesota Vikings.

And the results are not better. The defense is a shell of the "No Fly Zone" D from a few years ago. The Jets ran 323 yards per team on Sunday. Rookie Sam Darnold threw two fine touchdown passes to Robby Anderson. Darnold had 198 yards and two touchdowns for just 10 goals.

How much can we blame for coaching? Keenum does not produce, after being superb with the Vikings. Is it Joseph's fault? Is it on Joseph that the Broncos had no interest in attacking Isaiah Crowell or Bilal Powell on Sunday? Maybe, maybe not, but the coach with a record of 7-14 is most likely to take the fall.

"This team has too much talent to score just 16 points and give up 34," said cornerback Chris Harris at The Athletic.

Joseph may not be fired after six games, no matter what happens next week, but the Rams game could have a decisive influence on how he will spend the rest of his time with the Broncos. A frustrated victory would do wonders. A defeat, especially a defeat against a team that can embarrass any opponent, would give the Broncos (whose two wins combined with four points) a 2-4 record. A record of 2-4 is not a death sentence, but Joseph's job security would become an even more intense conversation in Denver. Having Gary Kubiak, the coach who won the Super Bowl 50, in the Denver office as an easy replacement will not scare you.

It was a bad week for Joseph. Instead of a 3-1 start with a win over the Chiefs last Monday, the Broncos missed that match and then doubled with a horrible outing to New York. It is difficult to change, especially at the beginning of the season. It probably will not happen in Denver either. But unless the Broncos do much better against the Rams next Sunday, Joseph's future with the Broncos may well begin to look rather bleak.

Here are the rest of the winners and losers of the matches of the week 5 of Sunday:

This is perhaps the main reason why his Rams are the best football team.

Few coaches have enough confidence to make McVay's choice to seal a win against the Seahawks on Sunday. The Rams faced the fourth and last goal. They still had 1:39 after a bad spot as an official on a Todd Gurley race twice before. Los Angeles was 42 years old. A punt shot seemed likely and the Rams sent the punting team. McVay then called the end of the allotted time and decided that he preferred not to return the ball to Russell Wilson.

It was risky to go there. If the game is drunk, the Seahawks may need 10 yards to try to score a winning goal. Colts coach Frank Reich was torn by a similar decision in fourth downhill last week on his own territory. But McVay's bet worked. Quarterback Jared Goff is sneaking for a few meters and the first. Game over.

The Rams are 5-0 after the 33-31 victory over the Seahawks. And it's not like McVay is going to let go of gas.

Or at least it was bound for the bigger one.

Gano scored a goal of 63 yards at the end of the allotted time to give the Panthers a wild 33-31 win. He is tied for the longest winning match in the history of the NFL, tying Tom Dempsey's 63-yard punt for the New Orleans Saints in 1970. The Dempsey kick was the most along the history of the NFL for decades. Only Dempsey, Jason Elam, Sebastian Janikowski and David Akers scored a goal for 63 yards before Gano, and Matt Prater remains alone with an NFL record with 64 yards. Akers, Dempsey and now Gano are the only ones to have scored at least 63 yards past Denver's lean air.

The craziest thing about Gano's kick was that it was not particularly tight. He pierced it. Porter Michael Palardy told the Charlotte observer that Gano hit him so hard he thought it would have been 70 yards, and that sounds right.

If Gano missed one of the longest goals in his NFL history, this week's focus would be on how the Panthers left a big lead for the Giants, who resisted the 27-16 deficit in the fourth quarter. to take a late advance. Instead, Gano's kick relieved everyone.

"A wise man once told me that an excellent quarterback was as good as his kicker. … Gano has done a lot of damage right now, "said Cam Newton, according to the Charlotte Observer.

"Data-reactid =" 67 ">Steve Wilks: The Rams and Chiefs are still unbeaten, but the Cardinals have ensured that there are no more teams left without a win in the league.

It was only four defeats to start the season, but it must have seemed like an eternity to Wilks. The rookie coach made some questionable decisions during the first month of the season and finished the month of September without his first career win. He had a Sunday.

The Cardinals' 28-18 victory was against a San Francisco 49ers team that has lost much of its strength since Jimmy Garoppolo's knee injury and injured again on Sunday. The Cardinals did not do much in the offense, aside from a 75-yard touchdown between rookie quarterback Josh Rosen and teammate Christian Kirk, but the defense played well and scored on a fumble recovery.

It was certainly not a thrilling victory, but it should have been a relief for Wilks.

"Data-reactid =" 75 ">Kirk Cousins and Adam Thielen: Aside from a strange and bad day against the Bills, Kirk Cousins was all the Minnesota Vikings were hoping for. Thielen did not even have a bad day this season.

The cousins and Thielen continue to be one of the most dangerous liaisons of the NFL, and on Sunday they led a huge 23-21 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. The cousins threw for 301 yards. Thielen had 116 yards and a touchdown. Thielen is the first player in the history of the NFL to start a season with five straight games of 100 yards. This is remarkable since Thielen was not written.

The Vikings needed a big win after losing to the Bills and losing a game against the Rams. They were facing a 1-3-1 start with a defeat to the Eagles, the defending champions. But the Vikings played well and stayed late when the Eagles rallied. This puts Minnesota back on track and the Vikings will move forward with one of the most popular quarter-catcher combinations in the game.

In 2013, he had not yet received his receiver card but has not survived since then, during cups and training groups. He has played 22 career games with Washington and Atlanta before making the Tennessee Titans this season.

But Williams had a very difficult day on Sunday. Marcus Mariota scored a safe goal for Williams in the fourth quarter with the Titans behind the Buffalo Bills 10-6, and Williams just dropped him. It was a very open drop, one of the worst you'll see in the NFL. It was third and fourth and the Titans arranged for a field placement at the next game. The Titans finally took a 12-10 lead, but the Bills managed to score a winning goal after the 13-12 win. The fall of Williams was a crucial element in the loss of a point.

<p class = "canvas-atom-canvas-text Mb (1.0em) Mb (0) – sm Mt (0.8em) – sm" type = "text" content = "" It's all about me. One hundred percent, "Williams said, according to NFL reporter Paul Kuharsky. After the match, Titan coach Mike Vrabel also pointed out that Williams did not make a good run on a sloped pass that was chosen. It was a bad defeat for the Titans against a team of Bill that they should probably beat, and Williams' trip had to be long.

The Dolphins led a good 17-0 Bengals team on the road on Sunday, and looked like they were going home with a 4-1 record.

Then the last 20 minutes of the game have arrived. The Bengals have played in the last five games while the Dolphins have completely melted down and lost 27-17. That included two touchdowns, one on a Ryan Tannehill interception and another on a Tannehill fumble.

Dolphins are not a bad team. But they were not as good as their 3-0 record to start the season. And after two tough games on the road, it will be difficult for them to bounce back.

"Data-reactid =" 98 ">Dan Quinn and Marquand Manuel: We paid so much attention to the Falcons offensive coordinator's change after the 2016 season that we mostly ignored the change of defensive coordinator. And that one was voluntary.

The Smiths were sacked by defensive coordinator Richard Smith after the 2016 season, a season that ended with a 25-point lead in Atlanta in the Super Bowl. Quinn said that he had made this decision well before the Super Bowl. Manuel took over as defensive coordinator.

While the offensive coordinator of the second year, Steve Sarkisian, has received a lot of criticism, Manuel also deserves his share. The Falcons' defense has totally collapsed. Atlanta has yielded 43, 37 and 41 points in the last three weeks. The 41-17 defeat at Pittsburgh on Sunday sent the Falcons down to 1-4. Atlanta has many defensive injuries, including linebacker Deion Jones and several times, but this is probably not the worst defense in the league. And there is no doubt that Atlanta has the worst defense of the NFL in five weeks.

Quinn also deserves the blame. He is a senior coach on the defensive. He called to change coordinator. The Falcons appeared to be potential Super Bowl contenders before the season, but the collapse of the defense changed the game.
