From Carlsbad flower fields to the Pacific Beach sidewalk to El Cajon porticoes, San Diego County residents marveled Sunday at the sight of a Falcon 9 rocket taking off from the distant airbase Vandenberg to Lompoc.
The SpaceX booster left the platform at 19:21, producing a white, green and blue plume visible in most of California.
The attenuated rays of sunlight hit the unused fuel from the rocket, which shone brightly as the thruster moved the SAOCOM 1A satellite into space.
The rappel device then reached Vandenberg, where it made a safe landing, 230 km northwest of San Diego, the Air Force said.
In a few minutes, San Diego County residents began sending photos via email to Union-Tribune. Many of them came from mobile phones, but they were sharp enough to show the plume of the rocket that stretched across the sky.
At 8:55 pm, the U-T had received images from all the spectators, from the beach lovers to the inhabitants of the foothills for a night walk. Images were also sent from as far away as Blythe, Temecula and Lassen.
Images also came from Rebecca Agliano of Hemet, who said, "My 11 year old took the photos. It was the first launch of my kids as well as mine! I'm trying to watch it take off for a while now.
