Week 5 was not soft with some NFL kickers. An established kicker may well be on the hot seat after one of the worst kicking performances of all time. Another has seen his long series of consecutive goals shattered. Even one of the biggest players had a kick blocked.
Since the second week we have witnessed several high level disasters, things have calmed down – until this week. The kickers of the league were 48th out of 63 Sunday in 5th week, or 76% of the goals. That's 84% less than the average this year.
Although we have seen five winning shots, including four at the last second, the ones we are talking about the most are these failures.
Mason Crosby's 5 kicks were the best we've seen since 1997
Mason Crosby, the Packers' top scorer, had a memorable run as the team's kicker, but it's possible that it will end soon.
Crosby missed four field goals by the smallest margin of his 31-23 loss to the Detroit Lions. Three of Crosby's failures were not even very long: they had 38, 41 and 42 field goal attempts. His last offense of the day was 56 yards.
To make matters worse for Crosby, he missed an extra point as the Packers tried to get back into the game. By the time the Packers lost 31-20 with 9 minutes, Crosby had already 10 points behind the table. Crosby ended up leaving 13 points on the field in a game where the Packers lost by 11 until he reached a meaningless goal with time elapsed.
There is no doubt that if Crosby had scored his goals, the Packers would have had a chance to win a victory against the Lions. They would fall to 2-2-1 during the season.
His five missed kicks have been the biggest numbers in a match since Cole Ford missed four goals and an extra point in a 1997 match for the Raiders.
Crosby had missed only one extra point and a goal placement in the match and was leading the NFL with 10 goals scored. He has been with the Packers since 2007, so he might be able to keep his job. But his friend Aaron Rodgers (who has amassed 442 yards and three touchdowns) loses a good performance and may cost the Packers a win.
Robbie Gould had an impressive end of series
49ers kicker Robbie Gould missed a 45-yard goal in his game against the Arizona Cardinals. Until now, Gould had scored 33 field goals, the longest sequence in the history of the 49ers. Not surprisingly, Adam Vinatieri holds the NFL record with 44 consecutive field placements.
This forced the 49ers to perform a two-point conversion midway through the fourth quarter, missing while they were 14-12. The Cardinals made a small run to close the game, winning by a final score of 28-18.
Even Justin Tucker had blocked an investment
Justin Tucker is legitimately one of the best kickers of all time, but even the biggest are blocked. Baltimore was trying to tie at 6-6, but rookie Denzel Ward blocked the kick.
Cleveland won the game in overtime on a shot at goal in the final seconds – if Tucker had made it, the match might not have been extended. This is a rare missed opportunity for Tucker, who participated on Sunday after listing 81 of his 86 investment attempts since 2016. To his credit, he made his other three investment attempts, including one that made draw within one minute of the end. went to overtime.
Some kickers had some redemption
It was not so bad, though. Some kickers struggling at the start of the season reversed the trend and gave their teams a boost.
-
Greg Joseph of Cleveland scored the game-winning goal for the Browns in overtime after missing a 55-yard field goal just before the end of the regulation period.
-
Dan Bailey of the Minnesota Vikings scored two goals in the second half after missing two of his first three attempts in the first half. His field goals were decisive in the Philadelphia Vikings' 23-21 win over Philadelphia.
- Cairo Santos missed an extra points attempt to tie the match against the Seattle Seahawks at 31. However, he scored the winning goal in his 33-31 victory.
-
Texan kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn missed a goal in his first game of the game, but he had his next four games, including the overtime win against the Cowboys.
Other kickers missed, but that does not really matter
The other kickers also struggled to pass the ball, but that did not hurt the team too much.
-
Detroit Lions Matt Prater missed a kickoff attempt in his Packers win.
-
Jets kicker Jason Myers missed a 30-yard goal in his victory over the Broncos.
- The Steelers drove to the end of the field and scored a touchdown on the initial possession of the match. Chris Boswell's extra points attempt failed, his third missing from EXP and his sixth attack kick of the season. Fortunately for Boswell, his absence is irrelevant, as the Steelers easily beat the Falcons by a score of 41-17.
-
Caleb Sturgis missed a spot and an extra point for the Chargers, but for once, Chargers' hitting difficulties did not cost them. They still drove on the 26-10 Raiders.
A couple of kickers could even play the hero. Panthers kicker Graham Gano scored a goal of 63 yards over the finish to win a Giants win, while Bills' Stephen Hauschka was perfect in the Bills 13-12 victory over the Giants. Tennessee Titans – including the placement of the winning goal.
This is a strange year for the NFL in general. In week 5, this strangeness belonged to kickers.
