JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Two counties in Mississippi are reporting new cases of West Nile virus, bringing the total number of West Nile virus cases this year to 42.
The Mississippi State Department of Health announced Monday that Hinds County and Calhoun County each had a new case of mosquito-borne virus.
Mississippi is one of the largest numbers of serious West Nile infections in the country.
Hinds County reported a total of 16 cases this year. Harrison has four and Calhoun three. The counties of Adams, Forrest, Madison, Rankin and Washington have two each.
The cases of Attala, Copiah, Itawamba, Jones, Lauderdale, Marion, Oktibbeha, Pearl River and Walthall are reported.
Mississippi reported 63 cases of West Nile and two deaths in 2017.
Health officials urge people to reduce risk by using an insect repellent, by wearing long, light colored clothes and by eliminating stagnant water.
