Protesters in Caracas held a candle rally to demand justice.

Protesters in Venezuela have accused the government of murdering a jailed opposition legislator who, according to the authorities, has been killed.

Fernando Albán was arrested for what officials have termed drone assassination attempt against President Nicolás Maduro.

The crowds sought justice in front of the building in the capital Caracas where he had been taken prisoner.

The authorities claim that he has committed suicide by jumping from the 10th floor of the intelligence agency (Sebin).

The attack allegedly suffered by Mr. Maduro in August occurred while he was speaking at a military event in the capital. Seven soldiers were wounded, officials said.

The authorities subsequently accused the attack of Venezuela and Colombia. Both denied the request.

How was Fernando Albán dead?

He "asked to go to the bathroom and when he was thrown from the 10th floor," said Attorney General Tareq Saad on Venezuelan public television.

Interior Minister Nestor Luis Reverol said he had jumped out of a window waiting to be brought to court.

He stated that Mr. Albán had been the subject of an investigation for "destabilizing activities directed from abroad".

Mr. Albán was a municipal councilor in Caracas for the opposition party First Justice.

In a statement, the party said their member "was murdered by the regime of Nicolas Maduro".

Enrique Capriles, also a member of the party and a former presidential candidate, reportedly told the AFP news agency: "Those of us who knew Fernando know that he would never have acted against his life "

Reacting to this news, US Senator Bob Corker tweeted that the Venezuelan government should explain how the death was authorized.
