Even with all their star power and deep pockets, thumping hitters and powerful pitchers, the Los Angeles Dodgers are nearly three decades from their last World Series championship.
They make another race as elusive.
Only this time, Manny Machado is in the game.
The short stop slugging hit a three-run circuit that led to a 6-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Monday, sending Los Angeles to the NL Championship Series for the third consecutive year and the fourth time in six seasons.
That's what the Dodgers had in mind when they acquired the future free agent of the modest Baltimore Orioles in July.
They hope that Machado will be the one to transform Tinseltown into Titletown for the first time since 1988.
"I can not say enough about him," said Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts. "A player of his caliber, there are so many expectations of him."
Machado had only three hits in a 3-1 series win over the Braves, but two of them were circuits. He finished with six RBIs.
"We have prepared to arrive here," said Machado. "We will not stop until we get what we want."
Obviously, nothing less than a title in the World Series will do the trick.
While the Dodgers followed the usual celebration following a playoff win, they handed out T-shirts and caps, posed for photos in the middle of SunTrust Park, and then poured beer into the clubhouse. . next turn.
The Dodgers will face the Brewers in the NLCS. The first game will be Friday night in Milwaukee.
"We all know that there is still a lot of work to be done," Roberts said. "We still have eight wins to win."
Los Angeles spent most of the season in a close race with his rivals Colorado and Arizona and had to play a playoff game with the Rockies to win his sixth consecutive title at NL West.
"We took a hard road to get to this point, but I think it made us stronger and galvanized our team," said Roberts.
