The fiancee of a prominent Saudi journalist disappeared from the Saudi consulate in Istanbul a week ago, asked President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump to intervene directly in the disturbing case for "help to clarify" the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi.

In a Washington Post article published late Tuesday, Hatice Cengiz "implored" the Trumps to get involved. She also urged "Saudi Arabia, especially King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, to show the same level of sensitivity and to broadcast CCTV footage of the consulate".

The demand comes as Turkey prepares to search the diplomatic post in the posh 4th Levent district of Istanbul for evidence of Khashoggi's whereabouts.

A video surveillance image appeared Tuesday shows that Khashoggi enters the consulate. However, there is no evidence that he left later. Khashoggi wrote critically about the Saudi government for the post and other publications. Turkish officials believe that Khashoggi was killed inside the consulate, although they have not published any evidence to support this claim. Saudi Arabia strongly contests this claim.

The Post separately reported Tuesday night, citing a person familiar with the investigation, that before Khashoggi's disappearance, US intelligence had intercepted communications from Saudi officials discussing a plan to capture him. Saudi Arabia also rejected this statement.

Khashoggi had been living in the United States since last year for fear of persecution by the Saudi authorities. He sought to become an American citizen. He went to the consulate in Istanbul because he needed documents to marry Cengiz, a Turk.

"We were preparing marriage plans, life plans, and after the consulate, we were going to buy appliances for our new home and set a date, all we needed was A piece of paper, "she wrote in the Post's opinion piece. . "Jamal is a valuable person, an exemplary thinker and a brave man who fought for his principles, I do not know how I could go on living if he was kidnapped or killed in Turkey."

The US State Department said Tuesday in a statement that it had witnessed "conflicting reports on security and the whereabouts of" Khashoggi and called for a thorough investigation and "transparent results." ". He also noted that Trump was "concerned" about the case.

Jared Kushner, Trump 's son – in – law, has close ties to Saudi Prince Mohammed and the president made his first overseas trip as president of the United States in the kingdom. Trump said on Tuesday that he had not yet spoken of Khashoggi to the Saudis.

"But I'll be at some point," he said.
