Now, we know who is behind two crucial figures The witcher TV shows. Netflix confirmed the actors who will bring Ciri and Yennefer to life in his fantastic new epic.
Freya Allan, revealing Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, unveiled in a new interview with the Hollywood Reporter (In the badlands) and Anya Chalotra (Spirit of adventure) will join Henry Cavill's Geralt of Rivia, respectively Ciri and Yennefer from Vengerberg. After the leak of casting calls for Ciri had potentially indicated that the character could be played by a minority actress, Witcher fans who drive to Hissrich distance themselves from social media. But according to the showrunner, this did not affect the intensive casting process of the show:
It comes down to a few things. One, this property has such a passionate fanbase. I think that any leakage would attract this kind of attention and that it elicits negative reactions. I think that no matter what information is circulating, there will be people who respond in a positive way and people who react in a negative way. I think that's part of the realization of a television show, and in particular a show of this magnitude. In terms of why people have reacted so strongly, I think the fans really have images of these characters in mind and I do not blame them. I understood. When I read my favorite books, I certainly imagine the characters in a certain way. There are obviously one or two lines of description of Ciri in the books and people become very enamored of their own vision. I think coming as a writer and saying that my vision might be different from yours is scary for fans, but to tell the truth, I do not think that's the case. One of the things that is most important to me is that people are afraid of being stripped of the cultural context of The witcher, to remove its Slovak roots, which people in Poland are proud of. It could not be further from the truth. What I've always wanted to do is take these Slovak stories and give them a worldwide audience.
Although the Netflix series is directly inspired by the fantastic novels of Andrzej Sapkowski rather than the very popular video game of CD Projekt Red, Ciri and Yennefer are characters well known to the fans of the game. Ciri played a major role in the highly prized Witcher 3: The Wild Huntas a parish of Geralt and princess of the kingdom of Cintra, while Yennefer, a powerful witch, is one of the main love interests of Geralt in the games, as it will be in the television series.
The news also comes with even more casting confirmations. Jodhi May will play Cintra's Queen Calanthe, while Björn Hlynur Haraldsson will play the role of her husband, Eist. Adam Levy will play Mousesack the Druid; MyAnna Buring is at the head of a magic academy named Tissaia (with Mimi Ndiweni and Therica Wilson-Read as two witch apprentices, Fringilla and Sabrina); and finally, Millie Brady will play an excluded princess, Renfri.
We'll tell you more about Netflix's plans for The witcher as we learn them.
