Influenza can also lead to death. In a particularly macabre way, people with seizures can have a "multi-organ failure". Other serious complications can occur, such as an inflammation of the heart, brain or muscle tissue, or sepsis, which can all be life-threatening, according to the CDC.
The most terrifying part may be that the flu likes to break its own rules. During the famous 1918 epidemic, an estimated 500 million people, one-third of the world's population, were infected, notes the CDC. There have been about 50 million deaths worldwide and about 675,000 in the United States.
