SAO PAULO – The leader of the Brazilian presidential election will avoid the first televised debate preceding the second round of October 28 for medical reasons.

Doctors of the far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro said on Wednesday that he was not fit for Thursday's debate. He has jumped from other debates since his stabbing on September 6th. He left the hospital on September 29th.

Bolsonaro won Sunday's vote in the first round by 46%, followed by 29% by Fernando Haddad.

Haddad told reporters that he would go to the hospital to debate Bolsonaro if necessary.

Meanwhile, Bolsonaro threw a shot at Haddad on Twitter, calling him "puppet of a jailed conman".

Former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was prevented from running for corruption and chose Haddad to replace him as a candidate of the Workers' Party.
