Khabib Nurmagomedov wins the no. 2 place in the new PFP ranking of the UFC, and that's exactly where it should be.
The UFC updated its standings Monday by designating UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov as no. The best fighter in the world of 2 pounds for pound. He has just won the biggest win of his career, dominated by the fourth round bid of former champion Conor McGregor. Nurmagomedov feels at home at the top of the UFC standings, just behind his coach and teammate, UFC light and heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier.
Nurmagomedov has really demonstrated why he is one of the best fighters in the world. He was able to stand up and trade with McGregor, even going so far as to overthrow him in the second round. The man is in an incredible winning streak with 27 straight wins since 2008. Nürmagomedov has never suffered a defeat in the MMA competition. None is more worthy of no. 2 place that Nurmagomedov.
McGregor, on the other hand, has dropped no. 2 all the way down to no. 8 in the ranking. This drop in McGregor's ranking is way behind schedule. McGregor is now 2-2 in his last four fights (not to mention his TKO loss to Floyd Mayweather in the boxing ring). McGregor is lucky to still be in the top 15 given his layoff for two years and his loss. We know all too well how bad the filing system is, but in this case they have at least understood.
The list is good, but things could change quite quickly with the return of former light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, and other title fights like Max Holloway against Brian Ortega and Valentina Shevchenko against Joanna Jedrzejczyk. There's also a great fight between Cree "Cyborg" Justino, UFC featherweight champion, and Amanda Nunes, champion of the well-heeled. Do not be shocked if you soon see new faces at the top. Expect to see a change in the UFC ranking by the end of the year.
