WELLINGTON, New Zealand – An earthquake shook part of Papua New Guinea on Thursday, but no major injuries or injuries have been reported.
The magnitude 7.0 earthquake was large enough not to cause a tsunami, said Chris McKee, acting director of the government's geological risk management department.
McKee said that those responsible for the disaster had contacted people in the Pomio district near the quake site. He said that communication systems in the region were notoriously poor.
Mr McKee said that no major problems had been reported as a result of the earthquake, which he took for a good sign. He added that the earthquake was also felt in Rabaul Township.
According to the US Geological Survey, the quake occurred about 117 kilometers east of Kimbe, in western Great Britain, on the Pacific island nation, and at a depth of about 40 kilometers.
It was followed by two aftershocks of magnitude 5.9 in the same region, followed by a magnitude 6.3 earthquake that was centered further north-east of the island.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center's oceanographer, David Walsh, said the scientists do not have tide gauges close to the scene of the earthquake and that they are not able to say with certainty if tsunamis have been generated, he said. But the risk was low and probably only in the immediate vicinity.
Papua New Guinea is hosting next month the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit, which is expected to attract world leaders starting on 17 November.
An earthquake of magnitude 7.5 in February in the central region of the country killed at least 125 people and forced 35,000 people to leave their homes.
The most affected provinces of Hela and the southern Highlands are remote and underdeveloped, and assessments of the extent of damage and injury have been slow to filter.
Papua New Guinea, home to 7 million people, is located on the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, east of Indonesia.
It lies on the Pacific "fire belt", the arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean, where most earthquakes and volcanic activity occur.
