Odell Beckham's early exit to the locker room before half-time and his late arrival at the start of the second half drew a lot of attention during the New York Giants' 34-13 defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles Thursday.
After the match, Beckham told reporters that he had gone to the locker room to get an intravenous drip because he was cramped.
"Dehydrated again," said Giants coach Pat Shurmur about Beckham, who also left the game early against the Saints two weeks ago for an IV. "Some guys' bodies get dehydrated faster than others, so we have to keep looking for ways to make sure that it stays hydrated."
The television cameras captured Beckham heading to the locker room just before the Giants played their last offensive game against what was a sad first period, which plunged them into a 24-6 deficit. He then joined his teammates on the sidelines after the kickoff of the second period.
Upon his return, Beckham was excited. Cameras showed him banging on the head and hitting a side fan before turning around and screaming while walking among his teammates. Shurmur said that he had not seen Beckham hitting the fan.
"He can not do that, he should not do that," Shurmur said.
Nevertheless, it is easy to understand Beckham's apparent frustration and urge to motivate his teammates. Eli Manning struggled all night and was unable to generate a pattern that maintains training in the passing game. If there had not been the superlative effort of rookie Saquon Barkley, there is a good chance the Giants were excluded.
Beckham made six catches on 10 targets for 44 yards. The performance comes as a result of Beckham who expressed his frustration about the Giants' offensive in comments that Shurmur does not like. Beckham tried to explain his feelings to the media after the match.
"I hate to lose, it's the bottom line," Beckham said. "[We] I just have to keep going, digging, digging … that's really all you can do – keep digging and working harder or you can give up, and I do not think anyone here is giving up. "
While the Giants are 1-5 after the third consecutive loss, it is clear that the team is following the same trajectory as last season. Beckham said the team had to react.
"The disc is what it is," Beckham said. "How do you overcome that, how do you handle adversity, it will be just our Mr.O."
