Mom suffers horrific bruises while shielding baby during hailstorm

A 23-year-old Australian woman suffered horrific bruises to her body while shielding her infant daughter from hailstones during a freak storm that ripped through her car, The West Australian reported. Simpson used her body to protect her child as she smashed her car windows, the newspaper reported.

"I've learned my lesson today, Fiona Simpson wrote on Facebook.

Simpson, her 4-month old daughter and 78-year-old grandmother were caught in their car when the hailstorm hit near Kingaroy – located north of Brisbane in southern Queensland – on Thursday, News.com.au reported.

Simpson pulled her vehicle to the side of the road when heavy rains began to fall.

"I was not driving very fast," Simpson told the Australian Broadcasting Company. "I could not see in front of me, I could not see the line on the road."

Simpson said she then heard a loud bang.

"All this rain starts coming in, and the back window where my daughter was just … it's gone," she told ABC.

Simpson jumped into the back seat to protect young Clara.

On Facebook, Simpson's description of her baby's life and suffering, on her back, arms and head.

The ABCs of ABCs, the ABC reported.

When the storm passed, Simpson pointed to an ambulance, the ABC reported. Simpson's grandmother spent in the hospital after she suffered cuts in her right arm while her right arm was left "completely black" from the bruising, the television station reported.

Clara suffered minor injuries.

Simpson posted Friday on Facebook that she and Clara were "safe at home," while her grandmother was recovering in the hospital and would be home soon.

"Thank you for your concern," Simpson wrote, adding that she had received hundreds of messages, friend requests and telephone calls.
