A statement issued by the Director General of Atiku's presidential campaign organization, Chief Daniel Gbenga, in Abuja Friday night, confirmed the appointment of Obi.

The statement reads in part as follows: "The presidential candidate of the Democratic People's Party, Atiku Abubakar, has chosen a former chairman of the board of Fidelity Bank PLC and former governor of Anambra State, M Peter Obi, as a candidate in the 2019 presidential elections.

"Born on July 19, 1961, Peter Obi attended Christ King College in Onitsha and then at the University of Nigeria in Nsukka, where he earned a BA in Philosophy.

"However, we considered that Obi is humble. He did well run the state of Anambra when he was governor. He is not flamboyant and he has a knowledge of the economy.

"Obi would have supporters in the country, especially in the south-east of the country, even though his candidate had lost the governorship elections in his state.

"The general belief, however, is that he will do his job well as vice president and will also serve as a check to the PDP government," added the source.
