It remains to be seen whether the Conners will be fine, but I am delighted – and quite surprised – to announce that The conners is in perfect health. Tuesday's premiere Roseanne The spin-off (8 / 7c, ABC) – which was screened Friday in some offices, including TVLine, at ABC offices in New York and Los Angeles – is often tumultuous, often bittersweet and in at least one half a dozen cases, super really sad.
Under the ABC embargo agreement, I am not allowed to "discuss, involve, or in any way disclose the fate of Roseanne Conner's character." absence is addressed in the opening scene of the first episode. However, the family has had several months to adapt to her household without Roseanne and, as you can imagine, everyone is in varying conditions. Their favorite adaptation mechanism? Gallows humor.
John Goodman's Dan Good oscillates between anger and anguish, Laurie Metcalf's Jackie completely negates (and uses all her energy to rearrange the kitchen), Becky's Lecy Goranson's self-heals and Sara Gilbert's Darlene is … well, she is the glue holding everything and everyone together. The four actors – the main quartet, if you will – deliver sensational performances, both in the first and fourth episodes (which was also screened for us). Gilbert and Goranson, in particular, never seemed more tied to their alter ego, which allowed them to do their best work in these roles.
Merit also goes to the series' authors (Bruce Helford, Bruce Rasmussen and Dave Caplan wrote the first game, Darlene Hunt, Episode 4). They reached what seemed to be the perfect balance between darkness and light, while being respectful – almost sometimes respectful – of Roseanne's character.
But make no mistake: The conners full of poignant moments and full of tears, it's really very funny. And, given the depressing events that led to the creation of the series, we could all laugh, could not we?
THE LOWER LINE OF TVLINE: The conners pays tribute to Roseanne the character (and Roseanne the series) and pleads for his own existence.
