BARCELONA (Reuters) – Hurricane Leslie is expected to hit the Iberian Peninsula some hours ago, authorities said Saturday, bringing high winds and heavy rains a few days after the deadly floods on the island. Spanish Mallorca.
The storm is expected to hit lands around the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, before crossing the peninsula, bringing winds up to 100 km / h (60 mph), the Spanish meteorological service announced.
Earlier this week, 12 people died during the floods in Majorca in the Mediterranean.
Leslie is expected to weaken slightly as he moves east on Saturday, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) announced in the United States.
Saturday afternoon, Leslie was about 320 km west of Lisbon, said the NHC, adding that the cyclone would become a post-tropical cyclone and dissipate Sunday evening or Monday.
Spanish emergency services warned of the possibility of sudden floods and urged motorists to be vigilant in case of strong winds. Separate storm fronts in the north and east of Spain mean heavy rains Sunday in much of the country.
An abundant rain hit Mallorca on Tuesday, sending torrents of brown water into the narrow streets of the town of Sant Llorenc. The rivers overflowed their banks and invaded their homes, leaving the roadside strewn with crumbling vehicles and debris-covered beaches.
