Nebraska is on a 0-6 start for the first time in the program's history. And that reached that level in a heartbreaking way.
The Huskers, who had not won for 350 days (since October 28, 2017), had a 31-21 lead with a time of 5:41, but lost that lead and eventually lost 34 to 31 in overtime.
Nebraska got the ball to open the extra frame, but missed possession. Instead of trying to score with a center-of-the-field placement, the Huskers grabbed the fourth and last quarter of the first third. But a bad pass overcame the game from start to finish, forcing Adrian Martinez to start a prayer. But the prayer went unanswered and fell into the arms of Drake Anderson, from the Northwest.
From there, all that Northwestern needed was a score of some sort for the win. The Wildcats were cautious and won when Drew Luckenbaugh scored a 37-yard winning goal. The clutch caused a brutal defeat to the Huskers and brought Northwestern back to .500 with a 3-3 record.
Nebraska lost a 10-point lead in the last six minutes
With Nebraska leading 28-21, it seemed that Tre Neal had played a potentially mysterious game by intercepting quarterback Clayton Thorson of the Northwest. This interception allowed the Nebraska striker to score 31-21 with a time of 5:41.
Aside from a 61-yard Thorson touchdown pass at Flynn Nagel, the Northwestern offense did not do much in the second half. But on the next possession, the Wildcats were able to move the ball. That attempt eventually slowed down, but it allowed the Wildcats to reduce Nebraska's lead to 31-24 thanks to a goalie's goal with 2:27 remaining.
From there, North West coach Pat Fitzgerald curiously called for a kick upside down. He failed, giving the ball to the Huskers near the middle of the field. The Wildcats forced a stoppage and used their three time-outs to respect the clock, but Nebraska shooter Isaac Armstrong blocked the Wildcats on the 1-yard line with a brilliant punt.
North West forced overtime with a 99-yard drive
Despite the terrible position on the ground, the Northwest offensive quickly marched. Carlos Davis from Nebraska has certainly helped to solve the problem. Davis hit Thorson high and late as he delivered a pass from the end zone, giving the Northwest a much needed maneuvering room.
From there, Thorson separated the Huskers High School, completing six consecutive passes. His last three were the biggest. He first found Flynn Nagel for 32 yards to move the team to Nebraska territory. He then hit Bennett Skowronek for 27 yards until Nebraska 5 with 17 seconds to play. After stopping the clock with a pick, Thorson forced extra time by joining JJ Jefferson for a five-yard touchdown.
Thorson made mistakes on Saturday, but was caught off guard when his team needed him. He finished with 41 points out of 64 for 455 yards in the afternoon.
This is a new minimum for Nebraska
Nebraska is one of the most important programs in the history of college football. From its first season in 1890, the Huskers had never started the 0-6 – until 2018. The previous record was 0-5 in 1945, a mark equal to the loss to Wisconsin last week. Nebraska controlled the game throughout the match on Saturday and seemed willing to ensure a new record was not set.
Instead, the Huskers have completely collapsed and remain one of four winless teams in 2018. Maybe Minnesota's visit next week may be the match to break the losing streak.
