Richard Jefferson said that he had decided to "leave basketball" in an Instagram post posted on Saturday, which largely served as a dedication to his father, who died last month.
"Last month, I was confronted with two life-changing events – my decision to move from basketball to the tragic death of Big Rich," Jefferson wrote. "The support of my family and friends has been huge."
Jefferson played 17 seasons in the NBA, winning a championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 as a key player in the role. The 38-year-old played an average 8.2 minutes per game in 20 games with the Denver Nuggets last season. He has also played for the Nets, Bucks, Spurs, Warriors, Jazz and Mavericks.
Richard Jefferson's father was killed in a California shootout on Sept. 19, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Jefferson and his father had been close together in recent years, sources told ESPN 's Dave McMenamin last month, while Jefferson, his wife and two children were spending the summer in South Bay, in Los Angeles, not far from Jefferson Sr.'s home in Inglewood.
"It was really a real GO," Jefferson wrote about his father. "All his one-liners, his cooking and his ability to make a whole room laugh will be missed."
Prior to his announcement Saturday, the young Jefferson had started a post-professional career in audiovisual journalism, appearing on ESPN and other networks.
