A high school principal from Harnett County was replaced a week after asking a high school student to remove a jersey with President Donald Trump's name on the back.
The Harnett School System announced Friday the appointment of a new director for the Harnett Central High School. The district said the change was directly related to measures taken last week by Cindy Gordon, former principal director of Harnett Central, to ask the student not to wear the Trump shirt.
The district has announced leadership changes in several of its schools, including Harnett Central, on Friday afternoon. The changes come into effect immediately, according to the district press release.
The high school had encouraged students to dress up with a patriotic theme for the October 5 football match, reported ABC11.
Mike Collins, a parent in Harnett Central, told the news channel that the high school principal had asked his 18-year-old son to remove his jersey, which was "too political" for some at the football game. The red, white and blue jersey featured "USA" and the torch of the Statue of Liberty on the front, with "Trump" and number 45 on the back.
Catherine Jones, the current principal of Harnett Elementary School, will be the new director of Harnett Central High. Calvetta Dunkins, Assistant Director at Dunn Middle School, will be Acting Director at Harnett Primary.
The press release did not mention Gordon's name, or whether she was now employed by the school system.
"Once again, we would like to point out that Harnett County schools support and affirm the right of students to express themselves – especially by wearing clothes expressing political messages or by supporting political candidates or officials – to so as not to disrupt school or school events, "said the district. press release said.
Tony Buzzard, a lawyer representing the Collins family, told The News & Observer: "We are very pleased that the school board and the county have quickly solved the problem."
Buzzard said the family wanted the board to recognize what had happened.
When asked if the family could consider any other measures, Buzzard said that he was not sure. But he added that Friday's announcement would influence their decisions.
