CHARLOTTE, NC – About 9,000 Duke Energy customers are still in the dark in the Charlotte area after Tropical Storm Michael hit the Carolinas earlier this week.
At one point on Thursday, more than 500,000 Duke Energy customers were no longer supplied with electricity in both US states as a result of the bad weather that fell trees and power lines in the area.
According to Duke Energy, the vast majority should be available again Monday. They work day and night to restore power.
"Schools are another priority," said Bill Norton, spokesman for Duke Energy, about the dozen schools still without electricity. He added that they were working to get them back before Monday.
Teams from as far as Canada would be helping to deal with power outages, often caused by fallen trees. Duke Energy says power will be restored as priority, with hospitals and police stations topping the list.
"He's fighting now, now," Norton said. "It really looks like a military operation, they started with big battles – make sure the hospitals, the police, the fire stations are taken care of, and then make their way down the line."
