Britain's Lucy Charles won the silver medal at the Ironman World Championship, behind Daniela Ryf, who won despite a jellyfish just before the start.
Switzerland, 31, said the pain was such that she planned to retire from the race in Kona, Hawaii.
After the swim section, she was nine minutes from the top but was fighting to win in record time.
In men, Patrick Lange retained his title and then proposed to his girlfriend on the finish line.
The 32-year-old German Lange set a course record by crossing the eight-hour mark for the first time, while Britain's David McNamee was third.

Ryf, who won for the fourth year in a row, said she had been poked at the armpit by the jellyfish moments before the start of the race.
"I did not know if I could survive swimming in such pain – it was horrible," she said.

It boasts a record run of eight hours 26 minutes 16 seconds, beating the previous best time of 20 minutes.
Charles, 25, broke the swim record by leveling second place in her competition debut last year.
In the Ironman triathlon, competitors swim 3.8 km followed by a 180 km cycling section and finally a 42.2 km run.
