Steve Wilks, Cardinals, is very concerned about trouble in attack

MINNEAPOLIS – Cardinals coach Steve Wilks is already worried about his attack.

Arizona has yet to gain 300 yards in a game this season, beating 269 points in a 27-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, bringing them down to 1-5.

"Am I concerned, Majorly," he said after the match. "We have to fix it, we need to find ways to get into the goal zone and we need to fix it quickly."

This week may not be the one where Arizona will solve its crime problems. The Cardinals host the Denver Broncos on Thursday night. This means that the cardinals' offensive woes will be broadcast on national television. And being short of 300 yards in a match is only one of many problems.

The Cardinals are ranked in last place in the league by yards, first attempts, third conversions, third-run conversion percentage and ball possession time, among other categories, while remaining penultimate points marked.

Arizona had only 61 yards on Sunday, giving the team 384 rushing yards in the first six weeks of the season, the smallest total of the NFL. That's also the least for the Cardinals since 2009, when they had 288 in Week 6 and 360 in their first six games. The Cardinals are also the last in the NFL in rushing yards before first contact.

The Cardinals also made 0-0 on the third try, which Wilks described as "absolutely not good enough".

As to why Arizona's attack problems are repeated every game, Wilks said it was a good question.

"We have to find answers," said Wilks. "Again, I would tell you the execution I thought we had done some good things at the beginning to move the pocket and give (quarterback) Josh (Rosen) the opportunity to go out and always see the field and make some shots.

"We need to protect better, number one, and do a better job in the pocket, and we need to create a movement in the game of the race."

One solution might be to implement more hassle-free packages in the offense.

The Cardinals did not do anything wrong when they scored their last touchdown in the fourth quarter. Rosen said that he enjoyed the no-huddle and that he was "very" familiar with this product after he had been at UCLA for three years.

Wilks said that he was on the table.

"At the moment, we have to look at all the options and see what we need to do to make this offense effective," he said.

Another problem for the Cardinals was scored in the third quarter – which they have not done yet this season. They are the only team not to have scored goals in the third, while Washington is just behind with only one goal.

"It must change," said Wilks. "We have to do a lot better work out of the locker room and try to get into the end zone."
